This struggle began after they had lost sovereighty to Britain in 1840 in exchange for guarantees that they would be allowed to have their own land. As it happened in other colonies, they were deceived. So the Maoris began to fight against the British. The Maori Wars, as theyare called in history books, showed the fighting skill and heroism of the Maoris. But they were defeated by superior British forces. Thousands of Maoris died by the hands of the Redcoats, as the British soldiers were called. In the end, however, the colonizers had to recognize some of the Maoris economic and political rights. They were given lands in the centre of North Island, of coursenot the best lands, and only one fourth of what the Maoris had a hundred years ago.
